Hydrogen Homes

Back

Struktura has been engaged by our client Wainwrights to provide Civil and Structural Design Services for the development of the UK’s first Hydrogen Homes. The homes showcase the use of 100% Hydrogen for domestic heating and cooking which means unlike gas, no carbon is produced. The way we use of fossil fuel gas in order to heat and cook currently, accounts for around thirty percent of the UK’s emissions. Hydrogen offers an emission free alternative.

The innovative site located in Low Thornley in Gateshead offers the public a chance to visit and interact with these homes of the future. When used, the project will contribute to the governments Net Zero emissions target. The project is funded by the government’s Hy4Heat innovation programme commissioned by BEIS, National Gas Networks and Cadent in order to demonstrate the potential of hydrogen as a clean replacement for natural gas. The project forms a part of a larger initiative to create Hydrogen neighbourhoods over the next ten years.

As part of the works on this project Struktura’s services were enlisted to produce steel grillage support for the new modular homes, along with providing intricate designs for the foundations of the homes and supplying drainage design services. Through a variety of previous projects within the residential sector Struktura has been able to adapt and rise to challenges posed when working with new innovations and act with speed and confidence to exceed the expectations of the client.

Working closely with the client and all key stakeholders Struktura was able to provide works tailored to the project and site, ensuring all requirements were met and in line with our industry leading standards. Working on a new concept within the residential sector has meant that Stuktura is at the forefront of modern innovations and have been able to immerse themselves in a project that may be the blue print for the future of housing.
